  11. PixFolio is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a
  12. variety of bitmapped graphics formats and maintain multiple catalogs of
  13. images.
  14.  
  15. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  16.     BMP/DIB-Windows Bitmap
  17.     CGM -   Computer Graphics Metafile
  18.     CLP -   Windows clipboard file
  19.     DRW/GRF - Micrografx draw and graph files.
  20.     EPS -   Encapsulated Postscript with imbedded TIFF preview images.
  21.     FLI/FLC - Autodesk Animator and Animator Pro (tm) files.
  22.     GIF -   CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format
  23.     ICO -   Windows Icon
  24.     ICS -   Image Cytometry ICS files.
  25.     IFF -   IFF/LBM (Amiga) used by Computer Eyes frame grabber.
  26.     IMG -   GEM/IMG (Digital Research).
  27.     JPG -   JPEG
  28.     MAC -   Macintosh MacPaint files.
  29.     PCT -   Macintosh PICT files.
  30.     PCX -   Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush

  38. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  39. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.
  40.  
  41. *** Optional features ***
  42. PixFolio supports the additional file formats if you purchase the optional,
  43. extra cost ($15) PixFolio-Plus PCD/multimedia upgrade. This option requires
  44. that you have a Photo CD capable of reading KODAK Photo CDs and in the case
  45. of Video for Windows and/or Quick Time that your machine has the necessary
  46. Windows software. The PCD/multimedia, PixFolio-Plus option is available only
  47. to registered users of PixFolio because of licensing agreements on some of
  48. the support modules.
  49.  
  50.     AVI -   Video for Windows. (Requires Video for Windows)
  51.     MID -   MIDI music files.
  52.     MOV -   Quick Time movie files. (Requires Quick Time for Windows)
  53.     PCD -   KODAK Photo CD.
  54.     WAV -   WAVE sound files.

  56. Note: MIDI and WAV files can be cataloged just like image files; a placeholder
  57. bitmap is provided for screen and catalog displays.

  59. The major feature of PixFolio is the ability to build catalogs of
  60. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  61. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  62. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a
  63. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.
  64.  
  65. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  66. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.

  102. Main Features
  103.     PixFolio utilizes Microsoft's MDI (Multiple Document Interface) so that
  104.     multiple images can be open concurrently.
  105.  
  106. File Menu:
  107.     New File - create a blank image suitable for pasting from the
  108.            clipboard.
  109.     Open File - Open a new file for viewing.
  110.     Save File - Save an image, possibly in a different format.
  111.     Move/Copy file - Move or copy a file.
  112.     Delete - Delete a file.
  113.     Print - print all or part of an image.
  114.     Select Printer - select a printer
  115.     Close
  116.  
  117. Catalog Menu:
  118.     Select catalog: Create, delete, select or rename an image catalog.
  119.     Catalog. Create or update a catalog entry for a displayed image.
  120.     Browse Catalog. View catalog entries one by one; select a subset
  121.                     for viewing.
  122.     Build Catalog. Create catalog entries for groups of images.
  123.     View thumbnails of catalog entries.
  124.     Print Catalog Entries. Two formats are provided.
  125.     Export - Export the contents of a catalog for input to a database
  126.          or spreadsheet.
  127.     Rebuild Catalog Index. Recover lost space in file and compact it.

  129. Edit Menu:
  130.     Paste palette and image from clipboard.
  131.     Copy all or part of an image to the clipboard.
  132.     Cut a selected area from an image.
  133.     Crop an image.
  134.     Expand an image to fill the dimensions of the current window.
  135.     Resize an image by a percentage amount or fit to a given dimension.

  137. Options:
  138.     Set background color used when image is expanded.
  139.     Set whether to use a solid or pattern background color.
  140.     Display DIB or Bitmap format.
  141.     Control whether warning messages will be displayed.
  142.     Establish default operating options.

  144. Palette Options:
  145.     Palette manipulation (Brightness and contrast).
  146.     Convert to gray scale.
  147.     Dither to Black & White or color palette.
  148.     Play a GIF animation sequence.
  149.     Single step through a GIF animation sequence.
  150.     Change the speed of a GIF animation sequence.

  152. Capture:
  153.     Capture the contents of another screen or the Windows desktop.
  154.  
  155. Other:
  156.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a marquee can be
  157.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse
  158.     button can be used to draw a stretch marquee where the selected
  159.     image rectangle is copied.
  160.  
  161. Help:
  162.     Context sensitive help is included for all menu items.
  163.  
  164. **** Other Features ****
  165.  
  166.     PixFolio version 2.0 supports OLE version 1.0 as a server only. PixFolio
  167.     will automatically register itself as an OLE server the first time that it
  168.     is executed.
  169.  
  170.     PixFolio will accept "Drag and Drop" filenames from File Manager.
  171.  
  172. ******** Equipment Requirements **********
  173.  
  174. While PixFolio will execute in a minimal Windows installation, for example, a
  175. 286 with 2 megabytes of memory, program operation will be severely inhibited
  176. by a lack of memory. On such a configuration, large bitmaps, especially 8 or
  177. 24 bit images may fail. Other applications could be adversely affected as
  178. well and fail with unexpected UAE's. Actual results will vary depending upon
  179. the amount of memory used by other applications running concurrently.
  180.  
  181. PixFolio was developed and tested on a 20-MHz 386 with 8 megabytes of memory.
  182. It is recommended that PixFolio be run on a machine with at least 4 and pre-
  183. ferrably, 6 megabytes of memory. Running in 386-Enhanced mode will also
  184. make available the benefits of virtual memory.
  185.  
  186. The display of images containing more than 16 colors requires that you have
  187. a Super VGA or better video display and a 256 color Windows device driver in
  188. order to display the full range of colors in the image. However, PixFolio
  189. incorporates dithering functions that will allow display of a 256
  190. color image using a 16 color driver such as the standard VGA driver. Such
  191. operations are slow and the results are not as good as if you have a video
  192. display capable of displaying 256 colors.
  193.  
  194. ********** Program Limitations *************
  195.  
  196. PixFolio has no limit on the number of catalogs that can be created or the
  197. size of these catalogs except as noted below and the amount of available
  198. memory. However, the following points should be noted:
  199.  
  200. 1. PixFolio 2.0 will only run under Windows 3.1 or higher. Catalog file
  201.    formats are compatible with PixFolio version 1.04 with one exception:
  202.    if the text in a catalog entry's description exceeds 1200 bytes,
  203.    the catalog cannot be read by versions of PixFolio prior to version 2.0.
  204.  
  205. 2. The size of a catalog is limited by the amount of disk space where it
  206.    resides or 2,048 index entries. Catalog records are variable length and
  207.    depend upon the type of image and how big the comments are. It is
  208.    recommended that for performance reasons that catalogs be limited to
  209.    less than 2000 entries. This limitation does not apply to the NT version
  210.    of PixFolio.
  211.  
  212. 3. PixFolio may encounter difficulty with extremely large images, those in
  213.    excess of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is particularly true of color images
  214.    and even more so by 24 bit color or gray scale images. This is primarily
  215.    due to the increased memory requirements.
  216.  
  217. 4. While PixFolio and Windows supports 24 bit color and gray scale images,
  218.    the display of such images using a video driver that only displays 256
  219.    colors, can result in some lengthy delays whenever windows has to realize
  220.    the 24 bit RGB data to an 8 bit palette. It may take 15 to 20 minutes to
  221.    realize a 640 x 480 image depending upon the speed of your machine.
  222.    Dithering a 24 bit image to 256 colors can take more than an hour in some
  223.    cases. If you plan to work with 24 bit images, you may wish to invest in
  224.    a video board that supports "high color". One such board that appears to
  225.    work quite well is the ATI VGASTEREO F/X card.
  226.  
  227. 5. The support for GIF animation in PixFolio requires large amounts of free
  228.    memory. GIF animation files with a large number of frames or overlays may
  229.    unexpectedly fail if PixFolio runs out of memory.
  230.  
  231.    Autodesk FLI/FLC animation files likewise require large amounts om memory.
  232.    To provide maximum performance, the entire image is loaded into memory to
  233.    reduce delays caused by reading from disk. A lack of physical memory that
  234.    requires Windows to utilize paged virtual memory (in 386 Enhanced mode)
  235.    can result in "jumpy" animations. In addition a high performance video
  236.    board and driver is recommended to optimally display animation files
  237.    without pauses that destroy the effect.
  238.  
  239. 6. PixFolio has not been rigorously tested in a network environment. The
  240.    affect of network operations and more than one user accessing PixFolio
  241.    files concurrently cannot be predicted.
  242.  
  243. 7. Not all graphics formats are supported equally with respect to reading and
  244.    saving a file. For example, not all of the compression options are
  245.    currently supported for saving TIFF images. GIF images can only be saved
  246.    in GIF87a format. Likewise, some of the more obscure or obsolete formats
  247.    such as 4 color CGA formats for PCX cannot be written although they can be
  248.    read.
  249.  
  250.    CCITT Group 4 TIFF file comprssion formats are not supported at this time.
  251.  
  252. 8. The author has not been able to test PixFolio with printers that print in
  253.    color in Windows 3.1 except for an Epson 2550.
  254.  
  255.    One user has reported that PixFolio give very good results printing color
  256.    images on Start Micronics NX-1000 Rainbow and NX-1020 printers but you must
  257.    obtain the OEM driver from Star Micronics. Use of HP Deskjet 500C printers
  258.    requires obtaining the latest drivers.
  259.  
  260.    Printer performance when running under Windows 3.1 is much improved. It is
  261.    both faster as well as of higher quality. Changes to the printer drivers
  262.    also enable printing to color printers such as the Epson LQ-2550.
  263.  
  264. 9. The implementation of Micrografx .DRW and .GRF files is not rigorous. Some
  265.    features of these files are not supported. Unless you have Adobe Type
  266.    Manager or scalable typefaces, the rendition of fonts used in these files
  267.    may not be optimal when Windows matches fonts.
  268.  
  269. 10. If you have the KODAK Photo CD optional package, you may not be able to
  270.    render images at the highest resolution (16BASE) unless you have at least
  271.    8 megs of ram and a 34 meg swap file. These are limitations of the KODAK
  272.    PCD software, not PixFolio.
  273.  
  274. 11. Other program limitations, if any, can be determined by accessing the
  275.    online context-sensitive help.
  276.  
  277.  
  278. ****** Installation and Getting Started*******
  279.  
  280. If your copy of PixFolio was received on a distribution diskette, the
  281. installation should be done from within windows by running "SETUP" from drive
  282. A: or B: (whichever is appropriate). This is important as the files on a
  283. distribution diskette are compressed. Otherwise, the following installation
  284. procedure should be followed:
  285.  
  286. It is suggested that the files which constitute PixFolio be placed in their
  287. own subdirectory on your hard disk. These files are:
  288.

  306. Once the above files have been located in the subdirectory of your choice,
  307. start Windows and then use the Program Manager "Add" command to add PixFolio
  308. to the desired program group.
  309.  
  310. When PixFolio runs for the first time, it will establish a section in
  311. your WIN.INI file with program variables. These default options should enable
  312. you to start using PixFolio immediately. Once PixFolio is running you may
  313. access the online Help command for specific instructions and explanation of
  314. PixFolio menu commands.
  315.

  317. reviewing the user guide.

  470.      any image manipulation commands such as resize, crop, paste, etc., and
  471.      a new "display" bitmap will be created and displayed. If a 24 bit
  472.      image is dithered to 8 bits, the "display" bitmap will then be discarded.
  473.      It is recommended that the AutoDither option be turned on if you are
  474.      using a 256 (8 bit) color display and wish to manipulate 24 bit images
  475.      as it will be faster than trying to display a 24 bit bitmap. Also, the
  476.      dither operation that creates the "display" bitmap will result in better
  477.      rendition of the image than by trying to display the 24 bit image and
  478.      having to perform numerous "nearest color" comparisons.
